Schizophrenia

As is often depicted in popular culture, Schizophrenia is a nightmarish condition an individual maybe subjected to, affecting thought, behavior and emotion of the person afflicted, Schizophrenia is a severe and complex Psychiatric illness with a worldwide prevalence of 1 per cent

Many patients with Schizophrenia rely on others, as they are unable to sustain themselves being detached from reality and in most cases is unaware of their existing condition.

Symptoms of Schizophrenia

The symptoms of schizophrenia can be divided in 3 categories :
  • Positive Symptoms: Delusions and Hallucinations
  • Negative Symptoms: May look like depressive symptoms. Negative symptoms include social withdrawal, personal neglect, lack of interest and loss of motivation, emotional blunting.
  • Cognitive Symptoms: Difficulty solving problems, planning, memory, attention and concentration.

Delusions : They are false beliefs held with extraordinary conviction. Delusion can be of many types; however, delusion of persecution is the commonest in Schizophrenia. Patients with delusion of persecution would falsely believe they are being harmed. They may believe that people are always following them or others are always monitoring their activities.

Hallucinations : They are perceptions without any actual occurrence. Hallucinations can occur in any of our sensory modalities; however auditory hallucinations are most common in Schizophrenia. Patients of Schizophrenia would hear voices talking to them even when no one is around. They might talk back to the voice, which the family members or friends can notice as muttering to self.

Treatment of Schizophrenia

Positive symptoms of Schizophrenia can be managed quite effectively with Antipsychotic medications. However Negative symptoms and Cognitive symptoms respond less favorably to Antipsychotics.
